In order to meet the needs of the gifted students, a differentiated program, called the Hillside Enrichment Program, is in effect. Students who participate in this program are provided with a wide spectrum of educationally challenging units.
The HEP curriculum addresses a wide range of abilities, but does not replace the general instructional program and is designed to spark interest in the sciences and engineering for the self reliant and independent learners of Hillside. In HEP, students are encouraged to explore new vistas of learning. Some units that are covered throughout the year are:
The 3rd and 4th grade HEP teacher is Mrs. Marta Tran. She grew up in Portugal and came to the United States as a young teen. She went on to obtain both her BA and MA degrees from Kean University and has had the pleasure of working in Hillside as both a 6th grade teacher and the HEP teacher for a total of 15 years.
The 5th and 6th grade HEP teacher is Mrs. Nancy DaSilva. She is a Hillside native who has been teaching for over 19 years. Mrs. DaSilva obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Rutgers University and a Master’s Degree from Kean University. During her time here, she has had the opportunity to teach 3rd - 6th grade.
