HILLSIDE, an urban community with a population of approximately 22,000, is divided by Route 22, and it is located 15 miles southwest of New York City.  Hillside is surrounded by the cities of Newark, Irvington, Elizabeth and Union.

 

HILLSIDE HIGH SCHOOL, which is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the New Jersey Department of Education, offers a four-year comprehensive program.  There are approximately 877 students in grades 9 - 12.  Each student is offered an individual program of studies to meet his/her special needs and goals.  In addition there are two specialized Prep Schools: Engineering and Pre Medicine.

 

THE FACULTY - There are eighty two full time teaching staff members at Hillside High School.  The administrative team consists of the principal, two vice-principals and three directors.  There are four full time guidance counselors and a substance awareness counselor.  The services of a speech therapist and the child study team are also offered.

RANK IN CLASS

Class rank is computed at the end of each school year.  It is determined on the basis of all subjects for all students.  Rank is cumulative.  Seniors receive a mid-year average which is then used for the seventh semester ranking.  Honors courses are weighted 5 points higher than actual numeric average for class rank purposes.   Advanced Placement courses are weighted 10 points higher than actual numeric average for class rank purposes.

 

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students must earn 130 credits to qualify for a Hillside High School diploma.

 

Presently students must complete:

4 years of English (20 credits)

2 United States History (10 credits)

1 World Cultures/History (5 credits)

3 years of Mathematics (15 credits)

3 years of Science (15 credits)

2 years of Foreign Language (10 credits)

2 years of Fine, Practical or Performing Arts (10 credits)

4 years of Physical Education/Health (20 credits)

2.5 Credits Financial Literacy

Electives required    (22.5 Credits)

Also students must pass the HSPA High School Proficiency Assessment/Language Arts and Mathematics.  

 

ATTENDANCE

Students must also adhere to the attendance policy.  They cannot be absent more than 20 days from a class or they will not receive credit.

Hillside High School offers a wide variety of co-curricular activities, an intramural program; varsity, junior varsity and freshman level sports.
